  4. 04

Thank you and order status page extensions are available on every plan except Starter, so that surface is not a reason to be on Plus.

  5. 05

Splitting the $1,901 premium over eight exclusive capabilities puts each at $238 a month, so a store using three pays $1,188 a month for the five it does not.

Derived: $1,901 divided by eight Plus-exclusive capabilities.

  6. 06

Five unused Plus capabilities cost about ₹1,03,000 a month at ₹87 to the dollar.

Derived: $1,188 converted at a stated ₹87 exchange rate.

What Plus costs, and what the premium actually buys

Take a composite of three brands we have watched sign a Plus contract. The migration runs eleven weeks, the new checkout goes live looking almost exactly like the old one, and eighteen months later the only Plus-exclusive thing anybody has touched is the staff account limit.

Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term, or from $2,500 on a one-year term. Advanced sits at $399 a month billed monthly.

The premium is $1,901 a month. At ₹87 to the dollar, an exchange rate you should replace with today’s, that is roughly ₹1.65 lakh every month, and it is committed for three years if you took the cheaper term.

Nobody signs that contract for the staff accounts. The problem is that the features it was signed for are exactly the ones that need engineering time, and engineering time is what a brand has least of in the year after a migration.

The cost of an unused Plus feature, worked out

Eight capabilities are meaningfully exclusive to Plus: checkout UI extensions on the checkout steps, custom apps using Function APIs, B2B on Shopify, expansion stores, Launchpad, POS Pro at every location, unlimited staff accounts, and higher API rate limits.

Spread the $1,901 premium across those eight and each costs $238 a month. That is the number that makes the arithmetic uncomfortable.

Capabilities you actually useEffective cost of eachCost of the ones you do not
8 of 8$238Nothing
4 of 8$475$951 a month, about ₹83,000
3 of 8$634$1,188 a month, about ₹1,03,000
2 of 8$951$1,426 a month, about ₹1,24,000
1 of 8$1,901$1,663 a month, about ₹1,45,000

Three of eight is the honest self-assessment for most Plus stores in their second year, which puts about ₹1 lakh a month against capabilities sitting idle in the admin.

The point of the table is not to cancel Plus. It is to make the next six sections feel urgent, because each one is a capability you have already bought.

1. Checkout UI extensions on the checkout steps

Checkout UI extensions that render on the information, shipping and payment steps are available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan. This is the single largest thing the premium buys.

The thank you and order status pages are a different story. Extensions there are available on every plan except Starter, so any brand telling you it upgraded for post-purchase customisation upgraded for something it already had.

What the checkout steps can carry: a delivery estimate block, a trust or returns block next to the payment step, custom fields such as a GST number, a cart-value message tied to a threshold, and pre-purchase upsells.

The reason this sits unused is not technical difficulty. It is that an extension has to be shipped by an app, so somebody has to either find a public app that places the right block or build a small private one, and neither task ever reaches the top of a list.

Pick one block, ship it in a fortnight, and you have moved from three of eight to four of eight. That single change is worth $237 a month on the table above.

2. Custom apps that use Shopify Function APIs

Only Plus and Enterprise stores can install a custom app that uses Function APIs directly. Public apps containing Functions install on any plan, which is the distinction that decides whether this capability is worth anything to you.

The capability is the right to build. If you have a developer and a discount rule no public app implements, Plus lets you write the Function and deploy it yourself.

Most brands should not use it. A Function is small, but the app around it is not, and the config UI, the metafield writes, the failure handling and the version releases are the actual work.

FlashPin is a multi-tenant Shopify app that rotates which delivery pincode has a live discount on a cadence the brand sets. Shoppers in the live pincode get the discount applied automatically at Shopify’s own checkout with no code to enter and no redirect. Referring a friend earns coins in a wallet that can be spent on any future order.

The rotation clock, the metafield writes and the fail-closed behaviour when config is missing are the parts that take months, and none of them are the Function itself. That is the general shape of build-versus-install in this category.

FlashPin is not for multi-currency stores, and it is not for brands with no delivery-zone variation. A Plus store selling into six currencies is exactly the case where building your own is the better answer, because the constraint is the product rather than the platform.

The constraints any Function has to live inside, including the instruction budget and the absence of network access, are set out in what changed after Scripts died.

3. B2B on Shopify

B2B on Shopify is Plus-only and it is the most commonly ignored line on the contract, particularly in India, where most D2C brands have a wholesale side running on WhatsApp and a shared spreadsheet.

What it replaces: company profiles with multiple buyers, per-company price lists, payment terms including net terms, and a separate B2B catalogue on the same store you already run.

The work is not the setup. It is deciding your wholesale price architecture, which is a commercial decision the founder has been avoiding, and no software makes it for you.

The test is one question. If a distributor emailed an order today, how many people and how many files would touch it before the stock left the warehouse.

4. Expansion stores

Plus contracts include additional storefronts on the same agreement, up to ten in total. Brands routinely open a second Shopify account on a paid plan instead, and pay twice.

The obvious use is a second market with its own currency, catalogue and delivery rules. The less obvious one is a second brand, or a B2B storefront kept separate from the D2C one.

Check the bill before assuming this is not you. A separate Advanced plan running quietly for a sub-brand is $399 a month that the Plus contract may already cover.

5. Launchpad, POS Pro and the smaller exclusives

Launchpad schedules a campaign end to end: theme change, price change, discount activation, inventory publication, all at a set time and reversed on schedule. Brands that run drops still do this by hand at midnight, with the founder awake and refreshing the admin.

POS Pro is included on Plus at every location rather than charged per location, which matters the moment a brand opens its second store or a pop-up.

Unlimited staff accounts against fifteen on Advanced, and higher API rate limits, are the two nobody notices until they matter. Higher rate limits are worth attention if you are syncing inventory with an ERP or running bulk operations at scale.

None of these three justify the premium. Together they are $714 a month of what you are already paying, and going unused for lack of a fortnight of setup.

The reason for Plus that expired on 30 June 2026

Shopify Scripts were Plus-only for their entire life, and for years the tiered discounts, hidden shipping methods and gated payment options they enabled were the honest reason a brand upgraded.

Scripts stopped executing on 30 June 2026. The replacement, Shopify Functions, reaches every plan through public apps in the App Store.

That is a real change in the value of a Plus contract, and it deserves to be said plainly by somebody who builds apps for this platform. If checkout discount logic was your reason for upgrading, the capability is now available a plan tier or three lower.

SB&R is a Shopify app for chained referral rewards. Every referral link belongs to someone who has already bought. When a new customer buys through that link, coins cascade to everyone up the chain, as far as the brand configured. Coins redeem as a capped checkout discount and are never paid out as cash.

An app like that ships its own Function and installs on any plan, which is the shape of the whole post-Scripts market. The remaining Plus-only part is the right to write your own, and that is worth $238 a month to a store with a developer and close to nothing to a store without one.

Renewal is the moment to run this test. List what you have used in the last twelve months, price the rest with the table above, and take the number into the conversation.

When Plus is worth it anyway

Fee arithmetic beats feature lists. Assume your third-party gateway fee drops from 0.6% on Advanced to 0.2% on Plus, a 0.4 point delta you should confirm in your own contract and your own market.

At that delta, the $1,901 premium is covered by roughly ₹4 crore of monthly volume. Below that, the fee saving is a contribution rather than a case, and the features have to carry the rest.

Card rates and gateway fees vary by country, and the American version of this argument does not transfer to India unchanged. Get your own rate card before putting any of it in a model, and use the same break-even method as everything else in the stack, which is set out in the stack that pays for itself.

There is one case where Plus is worth it regardless of the arithmetic. A brand with a genuine wholesale business, or one running three markets from three storefronts, is buying something no app replaces, and for them the premium is not a premium at all.

For everyone else the uncomfortable question is the one this page opened with. If you have used three of eight capabilities in eighteen months, you are not overpaying for Plus, you are underusing it, and the fix is a fortnight of setup rather than a migration back down. What belongs in the stack around it, plan tier aside, is covered in the stack audit and in the extensions nobody can ignore.

Questions people actually ask

How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three-year term, or from $2,500 a month on a one-year term, with very high volume merchants moving to a variable platform fee negotiated with Shopify. The Advanced plan below it is $399 a month billed monthly, so the premium is $1,901 before apps, development or migration.

What can Shopify Plus do that Advanced cannot?

Six things matter in practice: checkout UI extensions on the checkout steps, custom apps that use Shopify Function APIs, B2B on Shopify, expansion stores on one contract, Launchpad, and POS Pro at every location. Staff account limits and API rate limits also lift. Everything else on a Plus feature sheet is available lower down.

Do you need Shopify Plus to customise checkout?

To put app blocks on the information, shipping and payment steps, yes. The thank you and order status pages are open to every plan except Starter, and Shopify Functions delivered through public apps change checkout behaviour on any plan. What Plus buys is the visual surface of the checkout steps themselves.

Do you need Shopify Plus to use Shopify Functions?

No. Public apps containing Functions install on any plan, so custom discount, delivery and payment logic reaches a Basic store through the App Store. Plus is required to install a custom app that uses Function APIs directly, which matters only if you intend to write and deploy your own Function.

Was Shopify Plus worth it just for Shopify Scripts?

It was, and that reason expired. Scripts were Plus-only for their whole life and stopped executing on 30 June 2026, and the replacement reaches every plan through public apps. Any store that upgraded to Plus primarily for checkout discount logic should re-examine the contract at renewal rather than assume the case still holds.

At what revenue does Shopify Plus pay for itself?

Work it from your own gateway fee rather than a feature list. Assuming the third-party gateway fee falls from 0.6% on Advanced to 0.2% on Plus, a 0.4 point delta covers the $1,901 premium at roughly ₹4 crore of monthly volume. Confirm both rates for your market before using that number.
