# Purchase-gated referral: what it is and how the gate works

> A purchase-gated referral program issues referral links only to customers who have already completed an order. Anyone can receive a link and buy through it, but nobody can generate one without buying first.

## Key facts

- A fraudulent referrer identity costs nothing to create in an open referral program and one full order in a purchase-gated one, or ₹1,200 at a typical Indian D2C basket. (Modelled on stated assumptions: ₹1,200 average order value, one completed order required before a referral link exists.)
- Purchase gating caps the referrer pool at the customer list, so a brand with 1,000 customers has at most 1,000 possible referrers no matter how much traffic the store gets. (Definitional limit of purchase gating, stated on a 1,000-customer base.)
- Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts per store, including app-created ones, which caps how many reward tiers can redeem at checkout at the same time. (Shopify Help Center, automatic discounts)
- A gated program producing roughly 36 referred orders per cycle on a 1,000-customer base grows with the customer count, not with site traffic. (Modelled on stated assumptions: 1,000 customers, 30% ever share a link, 12% per-link conversion, one conversion per sharing customer.)

## How does purchase gating change referral fraud economics?

An open referral program treats a signup as proof of a person. It is not. A signup is proof of an email address, and email addresses are free.

That gap is where the first serious attack on most referral programs lands. Somebody generates fifty accounts, refers themselves through all of them, and collects fifty rewards. No part of that sequence requires spending money.

Purchase gating puts a completed order between the attacker and the reward. Working the number on stated assumptions of a ₹1,200 average order value and a ₹150 flat reward, the attacker now spends ₹1,200 to unlock ₹150. The arithmetic fails before the fraud does.

The gate is not a complete fraud control and should not be sold internally as one. It raises the cost of entry, which stops volume attacks while leaving targeted and collusive ones intact. The behaviours still worth monitoring after gating is live are set out in [the referral fraud patterns worth watching for](/referral-fraud-patterns).

There is a second effect that is quieter and matters more commercially. Every referrer in a gated program has used the product at least once. The recommendation therefore carries information about the product rather than only carrying a discount.

## What does purchase gating cost you in reach?

Gating shrinks the referrer pool to the customer list. A brand with 1,000 customers has at most 1,000 possible referrers, whatever the traffic looks like, and the people who love the brand but have not yet bought are excluded by design.

State that cost before building rather than after launch. On stated assumptions of a 30% sharing rate and a 12% per-link conversion rate, a 1,000-customer base produces roughly 36 referred orders in a cycle. Some brands will look at 36 and decide the engineering is not worth it, which is a reasonable conclusion to reach on the way in rather than three months later.

The structural point matters more than the specific figure. Referred order volume in a gated program scales with the customer count, not with site traffic. Doubling visitors changes nothing; doubling customers doubles the program.

That makes purchase gating a retention-adjacent mechanic rather than an acquisition one. It compounds slowly, and only for brands that already convert reliably. A store still searching for product-market fit will get very little out of it.

Reward depth interacts with pool size, so both decisions belong in the same conversation rather than sequential ones. A shallow pool with deep cascading rewards behaves very differently from a wide pool paying a single level, which is worked through in [what happens when one order pays three people](/chained-referrals-paying-three-people).

## How is a purchase-gated referral different from an affiliate program?

An affiliate program recruits promoters. There is an application, an approval step, a commission rate, and a cash payout. The promoter usually has not bought the product and often does not intend to.

A purchase-gated referral recruits nobody. The pool is whoever already bought, the reward is normally store credit, and there is no application form at any point. Converting existing buyers into promoters without an approval step is covered in [turning customers into affiliates with no application](/customers-into-affiliates-no-application).

The payout currency drives most of the downstream differences. Paying individuals cash creates withholding, invoicing, and reconciliation obligations that issuing store credit does not, and credit keeps the value inside the business instead of sending it out.

Structure creates the third difference. Because gated referrals attach to a customer graph, rewards can travel up that graph in a way affiliate commissions usually do not, and that is exactly where the compliance questions concentrate. What can be promised, how it is described, and where a multi-level structure crosses a line are set out in the legal line on purchase-gated referrals.

Neither model is a better version of the other. They recruit different people, pay in different currencies, and answer different growth questions.

## Where SB&R fits

SB&R is a Shopify app for chained referral rewards. Every referral link belongs to someone who has already bought. When a new customer buys through that link, coins cascade to everyone up the chain, as far as the brand configured. Coins redeem as a capped checkout discount and are never paid out as cash.

The gate is enforced at link generation rather than at redemption, so a shopper who receives a link can always use it, and only a customer with a completed order can create one. Coins settle into an append-only ledger, which means a disputed balance six months later has one answer rather than an argument.

SB&R is not the right tool for cash-payout affiliate programs or for B2B and wholesale referral. Both depend on referrers who are not customers and on money leaving the business, and purchase gating is the wrong shape for either. If your best promoters are professionals who need to be paid in money, a store-credit gate is not a reward to them, it is a coupon they cannot use.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a purchase-gated referral?

A purchase-gated referral is a referral program where the link belongs to someone who has already bought. Non-customers can click a link and purchase through it, but they cannot create their own link until they have completed an order themselves. The gate sits on link generation, not on link use.

### Does purchase gating reduce the size of a referral program?

Yes, and that is the trade-off. Gating removes everyone who has not bought yet from the pool of possible referrers, so raw reach is smaller than an open program that lets any email address generate a link. What remains is a pool where every referrer has paid for the product at least once.

### Why does purchase gating reduce referral fraud?

Fraud in an open referral program costs the attacker nothing: create accounts, self-refer, collect rewards. Purchase gating puts the price of a completed order in front of every fake referrer identity. It does not make fraud impossible, but it makes each fraudulent link cost real money to create.

### Is a purchase-gated referral the same as an affiliate program?

No. Affiliate programs recruit promoters who usually have not bought the product and are paid in cash. A purchase-gated referral draws its promoters from existing customers and typically rewards them in store credit. The recruitment path and the payout currency are both different.

### How many customers do you need before purchase gating is worth it?

Enough that the customer list is a meaningful audience on its own. Because the referrer pool equals the customer count, a store with 200 customers is building machinery for 200 possible sharers. Most brands find the mechanic starts paying back somewhere in the low thousands of lifetime customers.

### When is purchase gating the wrong choice?

Purchase gating is wrong when your growth depends on people who cannot buy yet, such as pre-launch waitlists, B2B pipelines with long sales cycles, or media partners promoting on your behalf. In those cases the referrer is deliberately not a customer, and the gate blocks the exact people you want.
