Automatic discount on Shopify: what it is and how it differs from code
What the numbers say
- 01
A Shopify store can have a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts at one time, and that total includes discounts created by installed apps.
- 02
Shoppers can apply at most 5 product or order discount codes to a single order, a per-order limit that does not constrain automatic discounts in the same way.
- 03
Active automatic app-based discounts were capped at 5 before the limit was raised, which is why discount apps could previously hold only a handful of concurrent offers.
Shopify developer changelog, increased limits for automatic function-based discounts
- 04
A code intended for a 200-customer winback segment has no upper bound on redemptions once it is posted publicly, because the string works for anyone who types it.
Modelled on stated assumptions: 200-customer target segment, code shared to a coupon aggregator, no usage limit configured.
How is an automatic discount different from a discount code?
A discount code is a portable object. Once it exists it can be forwarded to a group chat, posted on a coupon aggregator, and applied by somebody it was never meant for.
An automatic discount has nothing to hand over. Shopify checks the cart against your conditions at checkout and applies the reduction if it qualifies. Eligibility is recomputed for every shopper rather than granted once and then shared.
Model the exposure to see why that matters. A code built for a 200-customer winback segment has no upper bound on redemptions once it escapes, because the string works for anyone who types it, while the same offer built as an automatic discount can only fire on carts that genuinely match the condition.
The trade-off is visibility, and it is a real one. A code announces itself in an email subject line and survives being screenshotted; an automatic discount stays silent until the shopper reaches a qualifying cart. That asymmetry, and how to advertise an offer that has no code attached, is the substance of why automatic discounts beat codes.
What are the limits on Shopify automatic discounts?
Shopify caps a store at 25 active automatic discounts at any one time, and discounts created by installed apps count towards that total. Stores running several promotional apps alongside a large catalogue reach the ceiling faster than they expect.
The fix is usually structural rather than technical. Group products into collections so one discount covers many SKUs, instead of creating one discount per product and burning the allowance on catalogue size.
Combination behaviour is the second trap and the harder one to diagnose. Shopify sorts discounts into product, order, and shipping classes and lets you decide which classes combine. Unless you explicitly set them to combine, Shopify applies only the single discount that saves the customer the most.
That default is protective and it is also silent. A promotion that looks live in the admin can be doing nothing at checkout because a larger discount wins every cart, which is the class of problem worked through in the discount stacking rules.
History explains why the ceiling is worth tracking. Active automatic app-based discounts were capped at 5 before the limit was raised, which meant an app could hold only a handful of concurrent offers and per-campaign function discounts were not viable at all.
When is a discount code still the better choice?
When the code itself is the message. Influencer reads, podcast spots, print inserts, and packaging slips all depend on the shopper receiving something quotable and typing it in.
Attribution is the second case. A code identifies its own source without needing a cookie to survive the journey, which is why creator and affiliate programs still run on codes even where an automatic discount would be cleaner at checkout.
Customer service is the third. An agent resolving a complaint needs to give one specific person something right now, and a single-use code does that in a way a condition-based rule cannot.
The honest position is that most stores need both instruments. Codes carry a message and an attribution signal; automatic discounts carry a rule you can defend against sharing. Mechanisms that avoid codes without becoming automatic discounts are compared in alternatives to discount codes for Shopify, and the margin cost of each type is ranked in every Shopify discount type by margin damage.
Where FlashPin fits
FlashPin is a multi-tenant Shopify app that rotates which delivery pincode has a live discount on a cadence the brand sets. Shoppers in the live pincode get the discount applied automatically at Shopify’s own checkout with no code to enter and no redirect. Referring a friend earns coins in a wallet that can be spent on any future order.
The rotation writes the live offer to a shop metafield, and a Shopify Discount Function reads that metafield at checkout and gates on the delivery address postcode. Because the gate reads Shopify’s own checkout data rather than a cart attribute the storefront could write, the offer cannot be claimed by a shopper outside the live zone.
FlashPin is not the right tool for multi-currency stores or for brands with no delivery-zone variation. An automatic discount is only worth gating on geography if geography changes the answer, and if every postcode you ship to converts and costs the same, a plain sitewide automatic discount will do the same job with less to maintain.
Questions people actually ask
What is an automatic discount on Shopify?
An automatic discount is a price reduction Shopify applies on its own when a cart meets conditions you set, without the shopper entering anything. Conditions can include cart value, quantity, specific products, customer segment, or, through a discount function, checkout data such as the delivery address.
How is an automatic discount different from a discount code?
A discount code is a string the shopper types, which means it can be copied, forwarded, and indexed by coupon aggregators. An automatic discount has no string. Eligibility is evaluated against the cart at checkout, so there is nothing to share with someone who does not qualify.
How many automatic discounts can a Shopify store run at once?
Twenty-five active automatic discounts, including any created by apps you have installed. Stores with large catalogues and several discount apps hit this ceiling faster than expected. Grouping products into collections so one discount covers many items is the usual way to stay under it.
Do automatic discounts stack with each other?
Only where you configure them to. Shopify sorts discounts into product, order, and shipping classes and lets you decide which classes combine. If two automatic discounts could apply and you have not set them to combine, Shopify applies the single one that saves the customer the most.
Why is my automatic discount not applying at checkout?
The three common causes are the 25-discount ceiling already being full, a combination setting that lets a competing discount win the cart, and a condition the cart does not actually meet. Check the active discount count first, because a discount can look live in the admin while doing nothing at checkout.
When is a discount code the better choice?
When the code itself is the message. Influencer reads, print inserts, podcast spots, and customer service goodwill gestures all depend on a shopper receiving something quotable and typing it in. Attribution is also simpler with codes, because the string identifies the source without needing a cookie.
